February 6, 2018 I went to one of Karen's weekend workshops. Karen was referred to me by my friend who was feeling concerned for my physical well being and how it was contributing to my mental well being. For the past year or so I have been experiencing frozen shoulder and various body pain. Although some progress has been made with physio - therapy it was not progressing fast enough. Even though I have only been to one workshop, I felt immediate improvement! I am feeling hope for the first time in the acceleration of my full recovery. (That is when I can get to her sessions) Winnie Lau Somatics and Osteoarthritis May 8, 2019 I have severe osteoarthritis in my right knee (bone on bone), my posture was completely out of alignment and my left hip was frozen, my neck, shoulders, left lower back and my thigh muscles were chronically tight and in spasm and diagnosed at Edmonton’s Health Pointe Pain Management Centre as chronic pain syndrome. I gradually stopped doing the things I loved to do like nature walks, bike riding and had difficulty with everyday chores like getting dressed, grocery shopping, housework, vacuuming, going up and down stairs and gardening. I would frequently experience loss of energy, more stiffness and soreness the next day. I gradually gained weight and could barely move somedays and developed bad balance. Before seeing Karen, I had tried everything I could think of to relieve the chronic tightness and pain and get my body back. I tried, massage, chiropractic, spinal decompression (on a rack), acupuncture, IMS (intermuscular stimulation), TENS, physiotherapy, floating, a personal trainer and HIIT (high intensity interval training), failed weight loss attempts, meditation, counselling, journaling, medication, hydrating more, doing supported exercise like swimming or walking in water, taking supplements like magnesium to help my muscles relax. I stopped taking public transit because the long block and half I tried to walk every day to my workplace required me to stop and lean against a wall or sit on a bench at least 5 times and took 3-4 time longer than others to get me to my desk each day. In the winter I feared falling because of ice and uneven ground and did. One fateful day, in the spring of 2017 one of my bus buddies asked me if I had ever heard about Hanna Somatics. When I got home that day, I searched the internet and found the Essential Somatics website. I signed up for the 5 daily emails to see what it was all about and I requested the monthly newsletter and wondered if there was someone locally who could help me. Karen was featured in the first newsletter I received and she was within a 45 minute drive of my home. It seemed like fate. I called and asked if I could see her and that very same week I had my first Hanna Somatic experience. It was life altering and by the end of the first session I felt different in my body. I also became aware of something very important that had been missing from my life living in my soma – HOPE!!!!!! Karen helped me by ... introducing me to these powerful tiny movements showing me that by moving into the area of tension and tightness and letting go slowly and noticing where there were jumps, shakes and lack of control, that I could identify this as motor sensory amnesia. My brain had forgotten to talk to these parts of my body. At first these pandiculations seemed counter to everything I had been taught to do to relieve tension in the body and that was to stretch. Now I understand these movements facilitate change at the level of the brain and even though they are small, they are mighty! I have experienced new space open up in my joints, my mind and body with a smooth fuller range of motion, better balance and posture and my hips are moving so I can walk again. If I have pain I can do these movements sitting, standing or lying down anytime, anywhere. I am back in the driver seat of my soma! The result was ... the more I learned and practised the more I wanted to learn. I have had two opportunities to attend 2 day Fundamental workshops taught by some amazing somatic educators. These educators created a safe container of life changing space and shared the somatic movement experience with a room full of other Somas and we are never the same soma twice. I have also attended smaller weekly somatics classes with Karen. One thing I liked was Karen's ...is how warm, approachable and gracious she is. I felt valued and heard. Karen truly cares. I have found the experience of somatics ... to be life changing and affirming! I would recommend Karen/Somatics to people who...have experienced physical injury and trauma in their body and they have tried everything to get better. If you want to keep moving, to more fully participate in life and remain independent well into old age then Hanna Somatics is the answer. Karen is knowledgeable, trustworthy, kind, encouraging, supportive and able to explain how to move and notice what’s happening in your body even with your eyes closed. Kathleen K |
